FINAL WEEKEND! We've gotten nothing but straight-up thrilling raves for our production of Lungs, by Duncan Macmillan--a play with no set, no props, and no blackouts, just two actors in a whirlwind of energy, wit, and emotion. Broadway World Austin uses adjectives like "wickedly funny," "remarkable," "stunning" "staggering," and concludes Liz Beckham and Michael Joplin deliver phenomenal, totally believable characters . . . This is everything you could want from an evening of theatre. The Austin American Statesman throws around the words "tour-de-force" and calls our production A remarkable play with a dynamic production and astonishing performances, “Lungs” at Hyde Park Theater is not to be missed . . . one of the most raw, intimate theatrical experiences I’ve ever encountered. Austin Arts Watch calls the show "incredibly skillful," mentions the "pitch-perfect performances . . . the chemistry is evident" and adds Somewhere in the mix of Duncan Macmillan’s finely tuned script, the actors’ authentic performances, and the wise guiding hand of director Lily Wolff, they have found a balance that creates the kind of tactile emotion that one can only find in the best works of art. Bursting with such authenticity that it would be a true shame if anyone reading this were to pass it up. The Austin Chronicle joins in the praise: Under Lily Wolff's direction, the two actors give remarkable, deeply honest performances. A smart, insightful play given a beautiful production from a truly talented group of artists. The production stars Liz Beckham and Michael Joplin and is directed for HPT by Lily Wolff.
I did some math. How many plane trips? London to New York? I . . . Two thousand five hundred and fifty. Two thousand . . . I could fly to New York and back every day for seven years and still not leave a carbon footprint as big as if I have a child. You’re having second thoughts. Ten thousand tons of CO2. That’s the weight of the Eiffel Tower. I’d be giving birth to the Eiffel Tower. In this 2012 London winner of Best New Play, a young couple can’t agree whether or not to have a child in this unstable modern world. Which will blow up first-—the planet, or the relationship?
"Duncan Macmillan's distinctive, off-kilter love story is brutally honest, funny, edgy and current. It gives voice to a generation for whom uncertainty is a way of life . . . bravely written, startlingly structured."
