2023-2024 HPT Season

Caught
by Christopher Chen
August 24 - September 23, 2023

Come see us transform HPT into a gallery for a show by a dissident Chinese conceptual artist, a man who was imprisoned and tortured for an art piece in which he organized an imaginary protest.Or . . . perhaps that's what we're doing. The New York Times calls Caught, by Christopher Chen, an "intricately constructed, unrelentingly destabilizing puzzle of a play." We think it's dazzling, shocking, and unmissable. Directed by Ken Webster, the show features Norman Tran, Rebecca Robinson, and Robert Pearson, and Mary Vo.

Chronicles of an Indigenous Offspring
written and performed by Zell Miller, III
October 12 - November 4, 2023

This show sold out so hard this spring that we're bringing it back so that everyone can see it. A therapeutic exhale that documents growing up black in Austin, Texas. A love letter to cultural landmarks that have been erased from the city's consciousness, Chronicles also exposes the city's dark past. Photographer Ivan Miller's black-and-white images establish a striking visual environment, and Miller's longtime musical collaborator Thomas "Hitman" Wheeler on percussion creates a funky sonic landscape. Together with Miller's masterful storytelling, they make a three-dimensional theatrical experience. Presented with ZM3ProductionsLive.

Barrio Daze
written and performed by Adrian Villegans
November 9 - 18, 2023

Following overwhelmingly enthusiastic critical and audience response on the show's recent Texas tour, the Latino Comedy Project and Hyde Park Theater present LCP Artistic Director Adrian Villegas' critically-acclaimed solo comedy Barrio Daze, the story of a fateful Election Day in the barrio through the lives of nine very different characters, all vividly portrayed by Adrian Villegasfrom a homeless borrachón to a Mexican-American senatorial candidate running an underdog campaign against a racist good 'ol boy opponent. A hilarious and unforgettable portrait of Latino life in America, offering a message of defiance and uplift to a community and country undersiege. "The only answer to Barrio Daze is helpless laughter."
(The Dallas Morning-News). "Damn funny. Poignant. This is laugh-out-loud material. Absurdly funny and dead-on insightful."(The Austin Chronicle).

The Good Thief
by Conor McMherson

From the playwright who brought you HPT's award-winning productions of St. Nicholas, Port Authority, and The Night Alive, Hyde Park Theatre presents Conor McPherson's The Good Thief: a small-time Irish hood's story, by turns funny, touching, and profoundly harrowing, of a simple job gone horribly wrong. Featuring Ken Webster.

My H.E.B.
by Raul Garza
May 30 - June 22, 2024

The meaning of life may very well be found on aisle four, behind the canned tomatoes. In this delightful Best of FronteraFest winner, now a full-length play, three very distinct individuals intersect in their one shared space--the grocery store. From the author of Confessions of a Mexpatriate and Running Bear. Directed by Ken Webster.
