Hyde Park Theatre Summer 2019 Writers Group

Entries are now closed for HPT's new writers group that kicks off in the summer of 2019. We hope to have members finalized by late spring. Playwrights of all backgrounds and experience are encouraged to apply. If we’re excited by your voice, we want you in the room!

The writers group will meet biweekly over the course of twelve months to read and respond to each other’s work. Applicants must live in the Austin area and work well with other playwrights. We expect the format of the group will evolve somewhat to suit the needs of its members. Each playwright will receive a public reading of their work.

To apply, email us

  1. A completed, full-length play (but see FAQ below if you don't have one)--the most polished one you’ve got.
  2. Your theatrical resume to include your address.
  3. Your artistic statement, no longer than one page. Dedicate some space here to tell us about the play you’d like to work on in the writers group. You can work on any early draft play, or start fresh with something brand new in the writers group.

Send your materials in one email to megan@hydeparktheatre.org. Include the words “Writers Group, Your Last Name” in the subject so we don’t lose track of you. We are accepting applications March 1st-April 1st.

We look forward to reading your work! Questions? Contact Megan, megan@hydeparktheatre.org--but check the FAQ below first.

1. I don’t have a full length play yet. Can I still apply?
Yes. Ideally, playwrights will already have completed a full length play, but there are multiple factors we consider in determining group members. Go ahead and apply!

2. I have a full length play, but it’s nothing like the play I want to work on in the group, is that okay?
Yes, that’s okay. We wouldn’t want to work with a playwright whose plays are all the same, anyway.

3. I’m just starting out as a playwright and don’t have much of a resume. Do I have a chance of getting into the group?
Yes! We encourage playwrights of all experience levels to apply. What matters most is that we’re excited by your work.

4. How much does the writers group cost?
There is no charge to be a member in our writers group.

5. When does it start?
Summer 2019, exact date dependent on member availability.
